How a $50 cable cost 12 days of lost production – until Blueberry Digital arrived!

insight-banner466Some interesting things can happen when you’re out in the field. A favorite of mine is from a panicked call I received. I answered the phone to a desperate voice on the other end of the line. The client was calling because their project had just gone online, but they were experiencing an odd intermittent network glitch every 15 minutes, which would shut down production.

I packed my bags and jumped on a plane that night, to fly 3,600km to their location. On my arrival I was introduced to their network team, and we sat down together to review the installation plans of the plant. After 3 hours of detailed investigation and inspections in the faulty areas I thought were the source of the problems, we found the culprit: a $50 brand-less patch cable that hadn’t been tested or labeled prior to the project going into production.

Although the client was relieved that it was a simple solution, the team was more than a little sheepish when they admitted that the installation contractor they had used gave them “an amazing deal” on the cables & installation.

The moral of the story? Next time you think you’re saving money, beware: a small mistake could hold back your project days, weeks, or even months.

Faulty interface causing intermittent alarms

Bad positioning of junction cables resulting in short

Sloppy and wasteful fibre cable installation

Improper pairing that threw off the signal
